Willtown Bluff, also known as Wilton or New London, is a special historical place in South Carolina. It's located by the S. Edisto River, close to Adams Run, South Carolina. This area was once a busy town.

Willtown Bluff was started around 1704. It was only the second "planned town" in the area. This means it was carefully designed before people moved there. The first planned town was Charleston, which moved to its current spot in 1682.

What Was Willtown Bluff Like?

Willtown Bluff was an important center for its region. It served as a place where people could vote. It also had courts where legal matters were handled. This made it a key spot for local government.

A Busy Trading Hub

Besides government, Willtown Bluff was a big commercial center. People came here to buy and sell goods. It was a hub for trade and business in the early 1700s.

Buildings and History

Today, you can still find some old buildings at Willtown Bluff. These buildings are from the early 1800s.

The Parsonage and Plantation House

One building is called the Parsonage, built around 1836. Another is the Willtown Plantation House, from about 1820. These buildings show what life was like back then.

Remains of a Church

You can also see the remains of a single column from an Episcopal Church. This church was built around 1836. It's a reminder of the community's past.

Hidden Village Remains

Under the ground, there are even older secrets. Archaeologists believe there are hidden remains of a colonial village. They think this village might have had as many as 80 houses. These hidden parts are like a time capsule waiting to be fully explored.

National Recognition

Because of its rich history, Willtown Bluff was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States. Being on this list helps protect the site for future generations.
