Wilson Washington Jr. was born on August 3, 1955. He is a former American basketball player. He also worked as an assistant coach at Norfolk State University. Washington was a top player, earning the title of All-American while playing for Old Dominion University. He also spent two seasons playing in the National Basketball Association, often called the NBA.
College Basketball Journey
Wilson Washington started his basketball journey at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. He first went to the University of Maryland to play for coach Lefty Driesell. However, he left after playing only one game.
He then moved to Old Dominion University, which was a Division II school at the time. Here, he and his team became very successful. In his second year, the 1974–75 season, Washington scored 13.7 points and grabbed 12.6 rebounds per game on average. He was named a third-team All-American.
The Old Dominion Monarchs had a great season, winning 25 games and losing only 6. They won the 1975 NCAA Division II national championship. They beat New Orleans by a close score of 76–75. Washington was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
In his junior year, Washington continued to shine. He averaged 17.9 points and 13.5 rebounds. The Monarchs finished with a 19–12 record. They played many Division I teams that season. This was to get ready for moving up to Division I the next year. Old Dominion reached the Division II Final Four again. This time, they lost to Puget Sound in the national semifinals. Washington was named a first-team All-American at the end of this season.
As a senior, Washington led the Monarchs in their first season in Division I. The team had a good record of 25–4. He averaged 18 points and 11.4 rebounds. He became Old Dominion's first Division I All-American. He received honorable mention honors from the Associated Press in 1977.
Over his three years at Old Dominion, Washington scored a total of 1,366 points. This was an average of 16.9 points per game. He also collected 1,011 rebounds, averaging 12.5 per game. He also blocked 363 shots during his college career.
Playing in the NBA
After finishing his college career, Wilson Washington was chosen in the 1977 NBA draft. The Philadelphia 76ers picked him in the second round. He was the 25th player chosen overall.
He played only a little for the 76ers. He averaged 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds in about 2.7 minutes per game. After 14 games, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets. With the Nets, he got to play a bigger role coming off the bench. He returned to the Nets for the 1978–79 season. During that season, he averaged 8.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
After his time in the NBA, Washington played basketball overseas. He played for teams in Italy and the Netherlands.
Becoming a Coach
After working in business for several years, Washington returned to basketball. He joined the coaching staff at Norfolk State University. He became an assistant coach for the 2011–12 season.
In his first season as a coach with the Spartans, the team had a great year. They won 26 games and lost only 10. They also won their first-ever NCAA tournament game. This was a big upset victory against the Missouri Tigers.
