The Wilton Center Historic District is a special area in Wilton, Connecticut. It was set up in 1970 to protect old buildings and history. In 1992, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical place for the whole country!
Exploring Wilton Center's History
The heart of Wilton, known as its town center, began to form way back in 1726. This was when the very first meetinghouse was built. A meetinghouse was a building used for both church services and town meetings.
The Old Churches of Wilton
The first meetinghouse was replaced by a new one in 1738. Then, in 1790, a third church building was constructed. This third building is still standing today! It's the current Congregational Church at 70 Ridgefield Road. This church is the oldest church building in Fairfield County. It's a very important part of the historic district.
Architectural Styles You Can See
The Wilton Center Historic District shows off different styles of old buildings. You can see examples of:
- Colonial Revival: This style brings back ideas from early American colonial times.
- Colonial: These buildings were built during the colonial period.
- Federal: This style was popular after the American Revolution.
Famous Homes and Buildings
Besides the Congregational Church, many other interesting buildings are part of this historic district. Each one tells a story from the past:
- Daniel Gregory House: Located at 11 Belden Hill Road, built around 1775.
- Original Congregational Church Parsonage: Found at 65 Ridgefield Road, built in 1832. A parsonage is where the church minister lived.
- Old Town Hall: At 69 Ridgefield Road, also built in 1832. This was once the main building for town government.
- Nathan Comstock House: Located at 77 Ridgefield Road, built around 1810.
- Winton House: At 80 Ridgefield Road, built in 1926.
- Halsey House: Found at 98 Ridgefield Road, built in 1934.
- Deodate Davenport House: Located at 108 Ridgefield Road, built in 1791.
The district also includes the Wilton Academy. The shape of the historic district is quite unique and not a simple square or circle.
