Win Min Than (Burmese: ဝင်းမင်းသန်း) is a famous actress from Burma, now called Myanmar. She was born on November 30, 1933. She is most known for her role in the 1954 Hollywood movie The Purple Plain.
Early Life and Education
Win Min Than was born in Bago, Burma, on November 30, 1933. At that time, Burma was under British rule. She grew up in Rangoon, which is now called Yangon. Her father was part British and part Burmese. Her mother was part German and part Burmese. Her father worked for the government.
During World War II, Japan took over Burma. Her family had to leave their home and moved to India for safety. She went to a special school called a convent school until she was 14. There, she learned to speak English very well.
Becoming an Actress
In 1951, Win Min Than's family sent her to London, England. She went to a dance school there, hoping to become a dancer. However, she soon realized that dancing was not her passion. She decided to return to Burma.
In 1954, something exciting happened. A friend of an American movie director, Robert Parrish, visited her home. The friend took a picture of her and sent it to the director. Out of about 200 women, Win Min Than was chosen for a big role. She would play a character named Anna in the movie The Purple Plain.
This was her very first time acting in a movie. She was a bit nervous on set. But the movie was a success! A famous magazine called Variety praised her acting. They said her scenes with the main actor, Gregory Peck, were very sweet. They described her as an "exotic yet restrained Burmese beauty."
Family Life
On January 7, 1954, Win Min Than got married in Rome, Italy. Her husband was a Burmese politician named Bo Setkya. His real name was Thakin Aung Than. They had one son together, named Aka Setkya.
Sadly, her husband passed away on September 6, 1969. He had a heart attack. Today, Win Min Than lives in Australia with her son.
