Winchester is a ghost town located in Worthington Township, Richland County, Ohio, United States. It sits along the Clear Fork River, south of a place called Newville. A ghost town is a place that used to be a town but is now mostly empty or abandoned.
History of Winchester
In March 1845, a man named Noble Calhoun planned out the town of Winchester. He chose a spot in Section 9, right by the Clear Fork River. A few houses were built there, and people hoped it would grow into a busy community.
However, the land where Winchester was planned had a big problem. It had a lot of debt, called a mortgage. Because of this debt, the land was later sold at a special sale by the Sheriff. This meant the original plans for the town couldn't continue. As a result, Winchester never really grew beyond just a few homes and eventually became a ghost town.
