What Can You See at the Museum?
The museum focuses on the history of the Willimantic Linen Company. This company had a very important mill in Willimantic. Later, another company called the American Thread Company bought the mill. The mill closed in 1985. The museum itself is located in the old building where the company used to have its store.
Explore the Sewing Machine Room
One cool part of the museum is the Brooke Shannon Antique Sewing Machine Room. Here, you can see copies of sewing machines from the late 1800s. These machines are like the ones used in the factory a long time ago.
Step Back in Time: Offices and Homes
Other exhibits let you see what things were like in the past. You can explore a recreated manager's office. There is also a copy of what the boarding houses looked like in the 1880s. These were places where many mill workers lived.
Tours of the Mill Area
A tour of the mill property is also part of the museum experience. However, you cannot go inside most of the mill buildings. This is because most of them are now on private property. The museum has many other displays. They show what daily life was like at the mill around the year 1900.
Important People Connected to the Museum
- Austin Cornelius Dunham was a very important person for the Willimantic Linen Company. He served as the company's vice-president.
