The Wingatui railway station, sometimes called the Wingatui Junction railway station, was once an important train stop in Otago, New Zealand. It was located between the cities of Dunedin and Mosgiel. This station was a key meeting point, or "junction," for two train lines. These were the Main South Line and the Otago Central Railway. Today, the Otago Central Railway is known as the Taieri Gorge Railway and is run by Dunedin Railways.

The station helped people travel to and from the small community of Wingatui. It had a special type of platform called an "island platform." This means the platform had train tracks on both sides. There was also another platform built just for visitors going to the nearby racecourse.

History of Wingatui Station

The Wingatui railway station first opened its doors on 1 September 1875. It served the community for many years before closing on 13 August 1983. The special platform for the racecourse was added later, opening in February 1898.

The Station Building and Its Designer

The main station building you can see today was built in 1914. It was designed by a very well-known architect named George Troup. He was famous for designing many railway buildings in New Zealand.

Why Wingatui Station is Important

Both the Wingatui railway station and its signal box are considered very important historical sites. They are listed by the Rail Heritage Trust, which helps protect old railway buildings.

The station and signal box also have a special historical status from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. They are classified as Category II sites (numbers 2360 and 2359). This means they are buildings of historical or cultural importance.
