Growing Up with Music and Games
Winifred Phillips loved music from a young age. Her school teachers helped her explore this passion. In middle school, her band teacher noticed she learned quickly. He often gave her new instruments to try when there was an empty spot in the school band. This way, she learned to play many different instruments and styles of music. She became very skilled in playing the keyboard and singing.
As a child, Phillips also loved playing video games. She played all kinds, from action games to big role-playing games (RPGs). However, she didn't realize she could make music for games until she worked in radio.
Her Journey in Music
Starting in Radio
From 1992 to 2003, Winifred Phillips worked on radio dramas. She was the composer, producer, and even an actress for these shows. The series was called Generations Radio Theater Presents. Later, it was known as Generations Radio Theater Presents: Radio Tales. These shows told stories based on classic books. The series even received money from the National Endowment for the Arts. National Public Radio (NPR) said the shows had "a top-to-bottom music score that is completely original." These programs were regularly heard on the Sirius XM Book Radio channel.
Composing for Video Games
In 2004, Phillips started making music for video games. Her first project was the game God of War. Since then, she has composed music for more than 20 video games. Some of her notable works include the LittleBigPlanet game series, SimAnimals, and Assassin's Creed III: Liberation. Her music helps bring these game worlds to life for players.
Writing a Guide for Game Music
Winifred Phillips is also an author. She wrote a book called A Composer’s Guide to Game Music. The MIT Press published it in March 2014. This book has won several awards, including a National Indie Excellence Book Award. It also won a Nonfiction Book Award from the Nonfiction Authors Association.
The book was very popular. In 2015, a Japanese version was published by O'Reilly Japan. It was titled Game Sound Production Guide - Composer Techniques for Interactive Music.
