The community of Winkler was named after John Winkler. He was a businessperson who worked in the local mining industry. A post office was opened in Winkler in 1899. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years until 1932.

Winkler is found about thirteen miles north of Salem. It is also about eleven miles south of St. James. Both of these towns are also in Missouri.
