Winsom (born in 1946) is a talented artist from Canada and Jamaica. She creates art using many different ways, like textiles (fabric art), painting, video, art installations (large art pieces you can walk through), and even puppetry. Winsom's art often explores ideas about human spirituality and our inner selves.

About Winsom
Winsom was born in Jamaica in 1946. She studied art at the Jamaica School of Art in her home country. In 1969, she moved to Canada. From 1974 to 1989, she lived in Kingston, Ontario. While there, she helped start a group called the Kingston's Black Women's Collective.
Art Shows and Exhibitions
Winsom has been showing her amazing artwork since the mid-1980s. Her art has been displayed in galleries all over the world.
Early Exhibitions
In 1989, her work was part of a group show called "Black Wimmin: When and Where We Enter." This show was put together by the Diasporic Africa Women's Art Collective (DAWA) and traveled to different places in Canada.
Winsom has also had her own special shows. These solo exhibitions have been held at places like the Art Gallery of Ontario in Canada and the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. In 2003, Winsom had a very busy year, with four of her exhibitions happening at the same time in Toronto!
Recent Exhibitions
In 2017, Winsom's art was shown in a group exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario. This show was called "Toronto: Tributes + Tributaries, 1971-1989."
From 2018 to 2019, the Art Gallery of Ontario held a special solo show just for Winsom's art, titled "I Rise." As part of this event, Winsom took part in a special dinner performance called The Feast in 2019. This dinner was with the Black Wimmin Artists (BWA) collective.
More recently, in 2022, her art installation called "The Masks We Wear" was shown at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
Awards and Special Honors
Winsom has received recognition for her important contributions to art. NOW Magazine once called her "the defining artist of Black History Month in Toronto." This shows how important her work is, especially in celebrating Black history through art.
In 2015, Winsom was given a special award: an Honorary Doctorate from OCAD University. This is a very high honor that recognizes her amazing achievements and influence as an artist.
