Winston Kinnard Garland (born December 19, 1964) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a point guard, which is a player who leads the team's offense.
Winston Garland played college basketball for four years. He spent two seasons (1983–1985) at Southeastern Community College (Iowa). Then, he played two more seasons (1985–1987) at Missouri State University.
In 1987, the Milwaukee Bucks picked him in the second round of the 1987 NBA draft. He was the 40th player chosen overall. Garland played professionally for eight seasons. Seven of those seasons were in the NBA, the top basketball league in the United States.
Playing in the NBA
Winston Garland played for five different teams during his NBA career. He started with the Golden State Warriors (1987–1990). After that, he played for the Los Angeles Clippers (1990–1991). He then joined the Denver Nuggets (1991–1992). Later, he played for the Houston Rockets (1992–1993) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (1994–1995).
During his time in the NBA, Garland played in 511 games. He scored a total of 4,799 points. His best season was 1988–1989 with the Warriors. In that year, he played in 79 games and scored 14.5 points per game. As a rookie, he was the first Warriors player in five years to achieve a "triple-double." A triple-double means a player gets double-digit numbers in three different stats, like points, rebounds, and assists, in one game.
Playing Overseas and High School Days
Winston Garland also played basketball in Italy for one year. He played for a team called Benetton Treviso during the 1993–1994 season. His team won the Italian Cup that year.
Before college and the NBA, Garland went to Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana. Famous NBA players Dick Barnett and Glenn Robinson also went to this school. In his junior year of high school, Garland's team almost won the 1982 Indiana State Championship. They lost in the final seconds to Plymouth High School, which had Scott Skiles, another future NBA player.
In 2007, Winston Garland was honored. He was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team.
