Winter ice cream (called téli fagylalt in Hungarian) is a special treat from Hungary. It looks a lot like regular ice cream in a cone. But here's the cool part: it's not cold! Instead, it's filled with a sweet, creamy mixture. This filling is usually flavored with chocolate.
This yummy snack became popular in the 1970s. People in Hungary enjoyed it as a wintertime alternative. Regular ice cream was thought to be too cold for winter. Winter ice cream was sold in grocery stores and even on trains! Its popularity slowed down in the early 1990s. This happened when many new candies from other countries came to Hungary. But don't worry, winter ice cream made a comeback! Many people started enjoying it again in the late 2000s and 2010s.
What is Winter Ice Cream?
Winter ice cream usually has a wafer cone. Inside the cone, there's a creamy filling. This filling is often a rich chocolate cream called ganache. Sometimes, a lighter cocoa-flavored cream called buttercream is used.
The top of the filling is covered with a layer of dark chocolate. Some versions use a different kind of chocolate called compound chocolate. You can find winter ice cream made in big factories. You can also buy it in special pastry shops called pâtisseries. It's even possible to make it at home!
Popular Flavors
When winter ice cream first became popular, it came in a few classic flavors. The most common was cocoa (kakaós). Other popular choices included vanilla (vaníliás), lemon (citromos), and coconut (kókuszos). Today, you might find even more fun and new flavors!
How it's Made and Stored
One cool thing about winter ice cream is that it doesn't need to be kept in the fridge. This is because it's not actually frozen ice cream. It can stay fresh for a long time, usually about 2 to 4 months.
In the past, these treats were a bit bigger, weighing around 40 grams or more. Today, most factory-made winter ice creams are a bit smaller. They usually weigh between 20 and 30 grams.
