Witch Island is a small, quiet island in South Bristol, Maine. It is also sometimes called Davis Island. This island is about 18 acres big, which is like 13 football fields! It's a special place because it's a wildlife sanctuary, meaning it's protected for animals and plants. No people live on Witch Island.

Many people visit Witch Island in the summer. They often come for a day trip to enjoy the outdoors. The island has a nice beach where you can land a kayak or canoe.

What to See on Witch Island

When you explore Witch Island, you might notice something unique. Hikers who visit the island often use small twigs and bark they find on the trails. They use these natural materials to build tiny "witch houses." These little houses are similar to ones you might see on Monhegan Island, but there are fewer of them here.

The Story Behind the Name

The name "Witch Island" comes from an old local story. People say the island was named after the only person ever known to live there. She was called the "Witch of Wall Street" because she had a very successful job in finance in New York City.

This lady decided to retire and live all by herself on the island. The story says that local people found her dead in her cabin in the late 1800s. Today, you can still see the old foundation of her home on the island. You might even spot some old water pipes and a kitchen sink!

Even though it's also known as Davis Island, the name Witch Island is the one most commonly used on maps and when people talk about it.
