Flanagan Island (sometimes called Witch Island on older maps) is a small island in the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the Virgin Islands group. This island belongs to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Where is Flanagan Island?
Flanagan Island is located in the beautiful Caribbean Sea. It is found just off the eastern tip of St. John island. St. John is one of the main islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
A Special Agreement
For many years, there was a disagreement about who owned Flanagan Island. Both the British Virgin Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands claimed it. This was because of how their sea borders were drawn.
However, in 1977, the United Kingdom officially gave up its claim. They signed an agreement with the United States. This agreement made it clear that Flanagan Island is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
An Uninhabited Nature Spot
Flanagan Island has no people living on it. It is considered a nature reserve. This means the island is protected to keep its natural environment safe.
Even though it is a nature reserve, Flanagan Island is not part of the Virgin Islands National Park. This park covers about 75% of St. John and other nearby islands. Flanagan Island is managed separately to protect its unique wildlife.
