Wolf is an exciting book for young adults, written by Gillian Cross. It was first published in 1990. The story takes place in London and is about a teenage girl named Cassy. It explores her relationships with her mother, father, and grandmother. The book also touches on themes of living together in a community and the idea of wolves, both real and symbolic.
The Story of Wolf
This book tells the story of Cassy, a teenage girl living with her grandmother. Both her grandmother and her mother, Goldie, keep quiet about Cassy's father. One night, Cassy hears strange footsteps. Whenever these footsteps are heard, she is sent to stay with her mother, Goldie.
Goldie lives in London with her partner and his teenage son. They make a living by creating unique programs for schools. These programs mix facts, fiction, and drama to help students think in new ways.
Cassy's New Life
Right now, Goldie's group is working on a play about wolves. They encourage Cassy to join in. Cassy tries her best to get used to this new way of life. It is challenging for her in many ways. She feels a constant sense of worry, like someone is watching her. Her nightmares are like a scary version of the "Red Riding Hood" story.
Eventually, Cassy learns a big secret that has been hidden from her for her whole life. Her father was involved in a secret group and dangerous activities. This secret explains why she has always been protected and why her life has been so unusual.
Awards and Recognition
Gillian Cross won a special award for Wolf. She received the annual Carnegie Medal. This medal is given to the best children's book written by a British author each year. It was a coincidence that another book, The Cry of the Wolf by Melvin Burgess, was also highly praised that year. That book was about a grey wolf as its main character.
The first edition of Wolf was published in the United States in 1991 by Holiday House.
