Wolfgang Dauner (born December 30, 1935 – died January 10, 2020) was a very talented German jazz pianist. He was one of the people who started the famous band called the United Jazz + Rock Ensemble. Wolfgang Dauner worked with many other great musicians like Hans Koller and Albert Mangelsdorff. He also wrote music for radio shows, TV programs, and movies.

Wolfgang Dauner's Musical Journey

Wolfgang Dauner loved music from a young age. He studied at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart in Germany. There, he learned about composing music, playing the piano, and even playing the trumpet.

Starting His Career in Music

In the 1960s, Wolfgang Dauner was part of a music group called a sextet, led by Joki Freund. A sextet is a group of six musicians. Later, in 1964, he started his own trio. A trio is a group of three musicians. This trio made its first recording, which was an early example of a music style called free jazz in Europe. Free jazz is a type of jazz music where musicians have a lot of freedom to improvise and create sounds on the spot.

Forming New Bands and Projects

In 1969, Wolfgang Dauner became the leader and composer for the Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart. He wrote all the music for them. A year later, he created a jazz rock band named Et Cetera. Jazz rock is a mix of jazz music and rock music.

He also worked with Hans Koller to start a big band called Free Sound & Super Brass Big Band. Big bands are large music groups, usually with many brass instruments like trumpets and trombones.

The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble

In 1975, Wolfgang Dauner helped create the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble. This was a very special group because it brought together many talented musicians. Some of the famous musicians in this group included Albert Mangelsdorff (who played the trombone), Ack van Rooyen (who played the trumpet), Charlie Mariano (who played the saxophone), Eberhard Weber (who played the bass), and Volker Kriegel (who played the guitar). They all worked together to make amazing music.

Music for Screens

Besides playing in bands, Wolfgang Dauner was also a composer. He wrote music for many different things, including radio, movies, and television shows. He even composed two special types of music called chamber operas.
