Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Women's Home Missionary Society teamed up with the Women's Missionary Society of the Pacific Coast in 1893. Together, they opened a special place called the "Oriental Home for Chinese Women and Girls." This home started in 1901 at 912 Washington Street in San Francisco's lively Chinatown neighborhood.

A Helping Hand for Immigrants

The Oriental Home was created to offer support and safety. It aimed to help Chinese women and girls who were new to America. Many of these individuals faced very difficult situations and unfair treatment. The home provided a safe haven and assistance.

Dedicated Leaders: Kate and Margarita Lake

Two important women, Kate Burton Lake and Margarita John Lake, were in charge of the home. They started their work there in 1896. Kate was the matron, which meant she managed the daily operations. Margarita was the missionary, focusing on the home's mission to help.

Both Kate and Margarita worked very hard to speak up for the rights of Chinese immigrant women and children. They helped many women and girls escape from tough living conditions. They were true champions for those who needed help the most.

The Home's Final Years

For reasons that are not fully known, Kate and Margarita Lake left their positions by February 1903. Just a few years later, a major event struck San Francisco. The "Oriental Home for Chinese Women and Girls" was completely destroyed by the powerful 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
