On the summit of Woodhouse Hill

Woodhouse Hill Fort is an ancient Iron Age hillfort located between the towns of Frodsham and Helsby in Cheshire, England. It sits at the northern end of an area called the Mid Cheshire Ridge. This hillfort was a protected settlement long ago, built to keep people safe.

The western sides of Woodhouse Hill have very steep cliffs, which acted like a natural wall, making it hard for enemies to attack. On the northern and eastern sides, where the ground is not as steep, the people built a large defensive wall called a rampart. In 1951, archaeologists dug into the site and found that this rampart was once about 4 meters (13 feet) tall! It was also strengthened with stones on both sides. They even found small, round stones that they believe were used as slingstones, which were like ancient bullets for slings. Today, Woodhouse Hill Fort is a protected historical site known as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The top of the hill is 137 meters (about 450 feet) above sea level. The area where the fort once stood, along with the land around it, is now part of Snidley Moor Wood. Much of this woodland is owned and looked after by the Woodland Trust, an organization that protects forests.
