Woodland Heights is a cool neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia. It started out as a special kind of neighborhood called a trolleycar neighborhood in the early 1900s. This means it was built along a trolley car line, making it easy for people to travel to and from the city center.

The neighborhood is located right next to the James River and close to Forest Hill Park. Woodland Heights is so special that it's listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Registry. This means it's an important place with a lot of history!

How Woodland Heights Began

Woodland Heights was first advertised in 1891. It was promoted as a fancy place to live by the river, not too far from downtown Richmond and Forest Hill Park. Back then, the "South Bank" of the James River was mostly farms and forests.

Woodland Heights is actually the oldest of three neighborhoods built along the same trolley car line. Its "sister" neighborhoods are Westover Hills and Forest Hill. The trolley line made it easy for people to live a bit outside the busy city but still get to work or shops.

Homes and Buildings in Woodland Heights

The homes in Woodland Heights show off different styles of architecture from the past. One of the very first houses built here was the T.D. Mann House, constructed in 1890. It was designed in the popular Victorian Queen Anne style. This style often has towers, turrets, and decorative details.

Later, many homes in Woodland Heights were built in the American Four Square design. These houses were often ordered from catalogs, like the famous Sears Roebuck catalog. They were known for being practical and spacious.
