Who Lives in Woodlawn?

Woodlawn is known for its diverse community. According to the 2000 census, many different groups of people call Woodlawn home.

About 43% of residents identified as African-American. Around 35% identified as white. Other groups, including Hispanic residents, made up the remaining population. This mix of cultures makes Woodlawn a vibrant place to live.

What Are Homes Like in Woodlawn?

Most of the homes in Woodlawn are small, cozy bungalows. These houses are often built in a "working-class" style. This means they are practical and comfortable.

This style is different from the homes you might see in nearby neighborhoods like King and Piedmont. Those areas often have larger or more elaborate houses.

Changes in the Neighborhood

Like many areas in Northeast Portland, Woodlawn has been experiencing a period of change. This process is sometimes called gentrification. It means that new people and businesses are moving into the area.

This can lead to new shops and services. It also means that more people are buying homes. For example, on one block between Ainsworth and Holman streets, 15 houses are owned by the people who live in them, while 5 are rented.
