The Woodman Road Historic District in South Hampton, New Hampshire, is a special area with two old houses. These homes are on Woodman Road, close to the border between New Hampshire and Massachusetts. A historic district is a place that has important old buildings or sites. These places are kept safe because they teach us about the past.

One of the houses is the Cornwell House. It was built around 1850. The other is the Verge or Woodman House, built around 1830. Both houses are built in the Greek Revival style. This means they look like ancient Greek temples, with columns and grand entrances. The Verge House was once a meeting place for a group called Free Will Baptists from 1830 to 1849.

This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The National Register lists places in the United States that are important to history.

What is the Cornwell House Like?

The Cornwell House is a two-and-a-half-story wooden house. It sits on a small hill, looking over the road. The front of the house has a pointed roof, called a gable roof. Its outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards.

The front of the house has three sections. The main door is set back into the wall on the right side. The corners of the house look like columns, which is a Greek Revival style. The roof has decorative brackets, which are like fancy supports. On the right side, there is a porch that can be used in spring, summer, and fall. Two parts of the house extend backward, connecting to a modern garage.

What is the Verge House Like?

The Verge House is also a two-and-a-half-story wooden house. It faces south and is closer to the road than the Cornwell House. This house also has three sections across its front. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side-gable roof. Its outside walls are covered with shingles.

A single-story section with a flat roof sticks out along the front of the house. The main door is tucked away under a porch on the far left side. A one-and-a-half-story section extends to the east. The property also includes an old barn from the 1800s. It used to have about 25 acres of farmland.
