Woodrow Stanley (born June 12, 1950 – died February 15, 2022) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Stanley served as the mayor of Flint, Michigan from 1991 to 2002. Later, he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives for District 34. He held this position from 2009 to 2014.
Early Life and Education
Woodrow Stanley was born in Schlater, Mississippi. This was on June 12, 1950. He moved to Flint, Michigan, as a child.
He attended and graduated from Mott Community College. After that, he went to the University of Michigan-Flint. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. He also took extra classes for a master's degree in public administration.
Political Career
Woodrow Stanley began his political journey in 1983. He was chosen to be part of the Flint City Council. He represented the 2nd ward. He was re-elected to the council several times.
In 1991, Stanley ran for mayor of Flint. He won the election, defeating the current mayor, Matthew S. Collier. He was elected mayor three times in total. He won against future mayor Don Williamson in 1995. In 1999, he won against City Councilor Scott Kincaid.
In 2002, citizens voted to remove him from office. This is called a recall election. It happened because of the city's money problems. After he left office, the state appointed a financial manager for Flint.
Stanley continued his public service. In 2004, he was elected to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. He represented the 2nd District. During his second term as a commissioner, he became the chairman. This meant he led the Board of Commissioners.
In November 2008, Stanley was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. He served the 34th District.
Personal Life and Passing
Woodrow Stanley was married to Reta. They had two children together.
He passed away on February 15, 2022. He was 71 years old. He died at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan.
