The Woodstock Warren Through Truss Bridge was a special iron bridge in Woodstock, Vermont. It carried Bridges Road (also known as Town Highway 24) over the Ottauquechee River. This bridge was built in 1925.

It was a rare example of a "double-intersection Warren through truss" design. This means it had a unique pattern of metal beams that made it very strong. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 because of its historical importance. Sadly, it was washed away by floods from Hurricane Irene in 2011.

About the Bridge's Design

The Woodstock Warren Through Truss Bridge was a single-span bridge. It was about 121 feet (37 meters) long. The road on the bridge was about 12.2 feet (3.7 meters) wide.

The bridge used a design called a Warren truss. This design uses triangles to make the bridge strong. This bridge was special because it had extra diagonal beams. These extra parts helped the bridge carry more weight.

Where the Bridge Stood

This historic bridge was located in western Woodstock, Vermont. It was about halfway between the villages of West Woodstock and Bridgewater. The Ottauquechee River flows east in this area.

U.S. Route 4 (US 4) runs along the north side of the river. Bridges Road used to run west from the West Woodstock Bridge on the south side. Today, Bridges Road ends where the old bridge once stood.

A Look at Its History

The Woodstock Warren Through Truss Bridge was likely built in 1925. At that time, the town was making many improvements to its roads and bridges. This bridge was built to help people travel across the river.

The bridge was very strong. It survived the huge Great Vermont Flood of 1927. This flood caused a lot of damage across Vermont. However, the bridge could not withstand the powerful floods in 2011. These floods were caused by the leftover storms from Hurricane Irene. The bridge was swept away by the rushing water.
