Woolworth is a ghost town located in rural northeast Lincoln County, Mississippi, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have left. It used to be a small community. Now, only a few old buildings remain.

The Story of Woolworth

How Woolworth Started

In the early 1900s, Woolworth was a busy stop. It was on the Mississippi Central Railroad line. This railroad ran from 1897 to 1967. Trains would stop here between Brookhaven and Silver Creek.

Woolworth was never an official town. It never had its own post office. But it did have a train depot. This was a building where trains stopped. It also had a "rail siding." This was a side track for 48 train cars.

Why Woolworth Became a Ghost Town

Over time, things changed. More people started using cars. New roads were built. These roads went around Woolworth, not through it. This meant fewer people came to the town.

The town's sawmill also closed down. A sawmill cuts logs into wood. When it closed, many jobs were lost. Soon, the trains stopped coming to Woolworth too. Without the trains and the sawmill, people moved away. The town slowly became a ghost town.

What's Left Today?

Today, you can still see a few things from old Woolworth. There's an old general store. There's also an old blacksmith shop. Both are next to the train tracks. They are now used by the property owner for storage.

Two houses were built after the town's busy days ended. One house is just north of the tracks. The owner of the old sawmill built it. People lived there until the 1980s. The other house is south of the tracks. It was built using wood from the old train depot. It was later moved to where it is now. The floor beams in this house were once ceiling beams. They came from an old school in a nearby community called Heucks Retreat.
