Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wooster is a small area located in Baytown, Texas, United States. It used to be a separate community in Harris County before it became part of Baytown.

Wooster got its name from Quincy Adams Wooster. He was from Iowa and bought more than 1,000 acres of land here in 1892. He then started the community of Wooster. Part of this land included an area called the Brownwood subdivision.

A big event happened in Brownwood in August 1983. Hurricane Alicia hit, and it destroyed almost all the homes there. After the hurricane, a government agency called FEMA decided that most of the land was not safe for people to live on anymore. Today, much of the old Brownwood area is a beautiful place called the Baytown Nature Center.

During World War II, Wooster also had a temporary camp. This camp held German soldiers who had been captured during the war.

Wooster Now

In the late 1990s, a large oil company called Exxon Mobil started buying homes in the Wooster area. Many houses were very close to the company's oil refinery.

Exxon Mobil bought these homes for a few reasons. They wanted to create a natural buffer zone around their plant. This green space helps separate the plant from homes. It also helped prevent problems if people living nearby thought their health was affected by the plant.

People living in Wooster were not forced to sell their homes. However, most residents chose to accept the company's offer to buy their property. Because of this, very few houses are left in the Wooster area today.

On January 24, 2023, a very strong tornado hit the community. This tornado was rated as an EF3, which means it caused a lot of damage.
