Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Worland is a small, unincorporated community located in western Bates County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is found right on Missouri Route U, only one mile away from the border between Missouri and Kansas. The larger town of Butler is about 14 miles to the northeast.

The Story of Worland

Worland was officially planned and mapped out in 1888. This process, called platting, creates a map showing streets and property lines. The community was named after a man named Harry Worland. He owned and ran a local pharmacy in the area.

Before the community was even planned, a post office opened in Worland in 1887. This post office helped people send and receive mail for many years. It stayed open until 1952, when it finally closed down.
