World Pizza Championship facts for kids
The World Pizza Championship is a super fun event held every year. It's where the best pizza makers from all over the world come together! They compete to see who can make the most amazing pizzas. This exciting competition started way back in 1991. Two magazines, Pizza e Pasta Italiana and PizzaNew, help organize it.
In 2008, pizza makers from more than 20 different countries joined in. Judges look at many things to decide the winners. They check how the pizza is made, how it tastes, how well it's cooked, and how it looks. There are also special contests like who can make a pizza the fastest, who can do cool tricks with pizza dough (called freestyle acrobatics), and who can stretch the biggest pizza dough! The main event usually happens in Salsomaggiore Terme, a town near Parma in Italy.
What Happens at the Championship?
One of the most exciting parts of the championship is when Miss Italia (Miss Italy) comes. She helps crown the winning pizza makers, who are called "pizzaiolos." This event is the biggest pizza show in the world! Over 6,500 pizza shop owners and people from pizza companies come to watch and learn.
Becoming a Pizza Champion
When someone wins a championship, they get a special spot in the Hall of Fame. Sometimes, past winners are even invited back to be judges for the next competition. Winners also get a cash prize, which can be around $10,000!
There are many different types of awards. For example, there are prizes for the Best Vegetarian Pizza and the Best Meat Pizza. At the very end, one pizza is chosen as the best overall. The winners get awesome rewards. They also get free advertising for themselves or their business. They receive a special plaque and can proudly tell everyone they won the biggest pizza competition in the world! One very famous winner is Tony Gemignani, who has won the championship many times.
