The World Porridge Making Championship is a fun competition where people from all over the world show off their skills at making porridge. Porridge is a warm, creamy dish usually made from oats cooked with water or salt. This championship has been happening every year since 1994.
The main prize is called the "Golden Spurtle". A spurtle is a special wooden stick used for stirring porridge. To win the Golden Spurtle, contestants must make traditional porridge using only oatmeal, water, and salt. There is also another prize for "Speciality" porridge. For this, people can add their own creative ingredients to their oatmeal.
The competition takes place in a small village called Carrbridge in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Volunteers from the local community help run the event. Since 2009, the championship has been held around the same time as World Porridge Day, which celebrates this simple but tasty food.
In 2023, people from twenty different countries competed! The winner of the Golden Spurtle that year was Adam Kiani, who represented Pakistan. A movie about the 2023 competition, called The Golden Spurtle, was released in 2025.
