The School Building
The main school building was built in 1927. It has one or two stories and is made of brick. The front entrance is set back and has an arch. This style is called Colonial Revival. It means the building looks like old American colonial homes.
Inside, the school had 12 classrooms. These rooms were on two different floors. They were set up in a "U" shape around a central area. This central area was used as both an auditorium and a classroom.
Other Buildings
The school property also has two other important buildings. These are an agriculture building and a cannery. Both were built around 1927. They are rectangular and made from cinder blocks. The agriculture building was likely used for teaching farming skills. The cannery was a place where food could be preserved.
A Special Part of History
Worsham School played a very important role in history. From 1963 to 1964, it was one of four schools used by the Prince Edward Free School system. This system was set up to help African-American students.
The Free School System
During this time, public schools in Prince Edward County were closed. This happened because of disagreements over ending segregation. Segregation was when Black and white students were kept separate. The Prince Edward Free School system was a private group. But it got help from the government. Its goal was to provide free education for African-American students. These students could not attend the closed public schools. Worsham School helped make sure these students could still learn.
National Recognition
Because of its history and unique style, Worsham High School is a protected site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This list includes buildings, places, and objects that are important in American history. Being on this list helps to preserve the school for future generations.
