Wulfstan v Thomas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wulfstan v Thomas was an important court case that happened a long time ago in English law. It was about Bishop Wulfstan, who later became known as Saint Wulfstan. He was asking the new king, William the Conqueror, to help him get back some land. This land belonged to the Cathedral in Worcester but had been taken away.

Why the Case Happened

Before the Norman Conquest (when William the Conqueror took over England), an earlier bishop named Ealdred had taken some estates. These estates were lands that belonged to the church area, or diocese, of Worcester. Ealdred took them as his own private property when he left Worcester to become the Bishop at York.

After Ealdred died, these lands were then held by the church area, or Bishopric, of York. So, the new Bishop of Worcester, Wulfstan, wanted the new Norman king, William the Conqueror, to make Thomas, who was the Bishop of York, give the lands back to Worcester. This was a very brave thing for Wulfstan to do. Thomas, the Bishop of York, was a favorite of King William and a trusted friend of William's brother, Odo of Bayeux.

What Happened in Court

Bishop Wulfstan won his case! The court decided that the lands should be returned to Worcester.

This court case was one of many similar legal battles that happened around that time. These cases were part of a bigger effort to resist the "Normanization" of England. This means that the Normans, led by William the Conqueror, were taking control of a lot of land. Within just ten years, about 64% of all the land in England ended up in the hands of only 150 people. Many of the English noble families lost their estates and their power.
