Xabier Lizardi (born José María Aguirre Egaña) was an important Spanish poet and writer. He wrote in the Basque language. He is known as a key figure in Basque literature before World War II. His writing style, called Symbolism, focused on feelings and ideas. People often compare his work to that of the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez.
Aguirre used the pen name Xabier Lizardi, which is how most people know him. He also sometimes signed his work as Zarauztar Sabin or Samaiko Zulo. He did not write many books, but his work is very important. His main books are Biotz-begietan (meaning 'In the heart and in the eye'), published in 1932, and Umezurtz-olerkiak ('Orphan Poems'), which came out after he died in 1934. These books show his deep, personal poetry. His writing helped change Basque literature from an older style called Romanticism to the Symbolism style.
Life and Works of Xabier Lizardi

Poetry Contests and Awards
Lizardi took part in a Basque poetry contest in Errenteria in 1930. He shared his poems Otartxo utsa ('The empty basket'), Paris'ko Txolarre ('The sparrow of Paris'), and Agur ('Goodbye').
The next year, in 1931, another contest was held in Tolosa. This contest honored the poet Emeterio Arrese. Lizardi presented his poem Urtegiroak ('The seasons of the year'). Many people, like Ariztimuño, called this poem his "masterpiece."
In 1932, Lizardi published his famous book Biotz-Begietan ('In the heart and in the eyes'). That same year, he won the Kirikiño prize for an article he wrote. The article was called Etxe barne bizia ('Life inside the house'). He also published two other works, Laño ta izar ('Fog and star') and Bi aizpak ('Two Sisters'). These appeared in a magazine called Antzerti ('Theater').
