History of Errenteria
How Errenteria Got Its Name
The town of Errenteria was founded in 1320. This was during the time when Alfonso XI of Castile was king. It was first called Villanueva de Oiarso or Oyarço.
Soon, people started calling it La Rentería. This was because the town had an office where taxes were collected. These taxes were on iron that was being sent out of the area. In medieval Castile, these taxes were known as royal rents.
The Basque name Errenteria began to be used more often in the late 1500s. In 1998, the local government decided that Errenteria would be the only official name for the town.
