The Xanthorrhoea platyphylla is a special kind of plant known as a grasstree. It belongs to the Xanthorrhoea family. This unique plant is found only in Western Australia.
Meet the Grasstree
This grasstree is a plant that lives for many years. It can grow quite tall, reaching up to 3 meters (about 10 feet) high. The main trunk of the plant can be up to 0.6 meters (about 2 feet) wide.
It has a long stem, called a scape, which grows from 0.5 to 0.8 meters (about 1.6 to 2.6 feet) long. On top of this stem is a flower spike, which can be even taller, from 0.9 to 1.6 meters (about 3 to 5 feet). In June, this grasstree shows off its beautiful cream-white flowers.
Where Does It Live?
The Xanthorrhoea platyphylla is found in different spots along the southern coast of Western Australia. You can see it in areas like the Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance regions. It grows between the city of Albany and Cape Arid. This grasstree likes to grow in sandy-clay soils that also have small stones or gravel.
