About the Story of Yaaba
In a Mossi village in Burkina Faso, a ten-year-old boy named Bila (played by Noufou Ouédraogo) becomes friends with an old woman. Her name is Sana (played by Fatimata Sanga). People in her village think she is a witch. Because of this, she is treated like an outcast.
Bila is the only one who treats Sana with kindness and respect. He calls her yaaba, which means "Grandmother."
What Happens to Nopoko?
Bila's cousin, Nopoko (played by Roukietou Barry), gets very sick. A traditional healer says that Sana has taken the girl's soul. Even though people accuse her, Sana goes on a long and difficult journey. She searches for special medicine to save Nopoko's life.
Sana successfully finds the medicine, and Nopoko gets better. But even after saving the girl, Sana is still seen as a witch by the villagers.
The Truth About Sana
Later, Sana passes away. After her death, the real reason why the villagers disliked her is finally discovered. Despite the unfair treatment, the love and wisdom Sana shared with Bila and Nopoko continue to live on in them.
