Yabu Band is an exciting Indigenous Australian rock and roots band. They started in 1998 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The word yabu comes from the Wongutha language. It means 'rock' or 'gold'.
The main members are brothers Delson Stokes (who sings) and Boyd Stokes (who plays guitar and sings). Jade Masters plays the drums. Lionel Sarmardin also played drums in 2017. When they play live, other musicians often join them. These include Roy Martinez (bass), Elizabeth Gogos (vocals), and Tony Shaw (didgeridoo). Tim Ayre sometimes plays keyboards.
Yabu Band has won many awards. In 2009, they won a Deadly award. This was for Most Promising New Talent in Music. Delson Stokes Jr was named NAIDOC Male Youth of the Year in 1999. Boyd Stokes won Guitarist of the Year in 2009. Jade Masters won Drummer of the Year at the TOO SOLID Music Awards. Yabu Band has also won four WAMi (West Australia Music Industry) awards.
In May 2012, Yabu Band toured Australia. They promoted their song, "Petrol, Paint and Glue." This song helps people learn about serious issues in Indigenous communities. It talks about the dangers of sniffing harmful substances. Delson wrote the song after a family member passed away from this problem. The song was nominated for Single of the Year at the 2012 Deadlys.
Yabu Band released their first EP (Extended Play) in March 2021.
