Yahya Ibn Ibrahim's Background
Yahya Ibn Ibrahim belonged to the Godala tribe. This Berber tribe lived in the Adrar region of Mauritania. The Godala were part of a larger group called the Sanhaja. They lived closer to the coast than other tribes like the Lamtuna.
These tribes wanted to uphold truth and fairness. They aimed to stop unfair taxes and practices that were not part of their religious law. They followed the Sunni branch of Islam and strictly followed the teachings of Malik ibn Anas.
A Journey for Knowledge
Yahya Ibn Ibrahim went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, a holy city for Muslims. On his way back, he met a religious scholar named Abu Imran al-Fasi. Al-Fasi was very interested in the religious beliefs and customs of Yahya's home country.
Al-Fasi found Yahya to be "wholly ignorant, though avid to learn, full of good intentions and firm of faith." This meant Yahya didn't know much about religious law, but he was eager to learn and had strong faith.
Yahya Ibn Ibrahim asked Al-Fasi: "What stops you from studying religious law properly, and from encouraging good and stopping evil?" Yahya explained that the teachers they had were not very religious or knowledgeable. He asked Al-Fasi to send one of his students, someone wise and pious, to teach his people.
Al-Fasi could not find a suitable student among his own. So, he sent Yahya to meet another scholar named Waggag ibn Zallu al-Lamti. Yahya followed this advice and visited Waggag. Waggag then suggested a man named Abdallah ibn Yasin.
The Almoravid Movement Begins
Abdallah ibn Yasin began teaching among the Godala tribe. He encouraged people to join a holy struggle, or Jihad, and to live by strict religious rules.
Strict Rules and Disagreement
Abdallah ibn Yasin stayed with the Godala tribe for a while. However, he thought their behavior was not always right. Over time, the Godala tribe became unfriendly towards him. They found his religious teachings too strict. They did not want to follow his legal advice or his guidance.
How Problems Were Solved
Ibn Yasin then visited Waggag again. Waggag spoke to the Godala tribe about their actions towards Abdallah. He told them that anyone who disobeyed Abdallah would be seen as separating themselves from the Islamic community. This meant their actions would have serious consequences.
Waggag then told Abdallah ibn Yasin to return to the Godala. Abdallah did so and dealt with those who had rebelled against him. He took strong action against many people he believed had broken religious laws.
