Interestingly, the name Yainax Butte was first given to a smaller mountain. That mountain is about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of the current Yainax Butte. Today, that smaller mountain is known as Council Butte.
Because so many people started using "Yainax Butte" for the larger mountain, the US Board on Geographic Names made it official. They formally changed the name to Yainax Butte in 1927. This shows how common usage can sometimes change official names!
