Yaiza Canzani García is a talented mathematician from both Spain and Uruguay. She is well-known for her work in an area of math called mathematical analysis. This includes special topics like spectral geometry and microlocal analysis. Currently, she is a professor of mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States.

Her Journey in Math

Yaiza Canzani was born in Spain. She spent her childhood growing up in Uruguay.

Early Studies

She started her university studies at the University of the Republic (Uruguay). In 2008, she earned her first degree in mathematics there. Later, she moved to Canada to continue her education.

Advanced Degrees

In 2013, Yaiza completed her Ph.D. at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Her research focused on the "Spectral Geometry of Conformally Covariant Operators." This complex topic was guided by two professors, Dmitry Jakobson and John Toth.

Becoming a Professor

After finishing her Ph.D., Yaiza did more research as a postdoctoral scholar. She worked at the Institute for Advanced Study and also at Harvard University. In 2016, she became an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her hard work paid off, and in 2021, she was promoted to associate professor.

Awards and Honors

Yaiza Canzani has received several important awards for her amazing work in mathematics.

Key Awards

She was given a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. This award helps promising young scientists with their research. She also received a Sloan Research Fellowship, which is another prestigious award for early-career scientists.

Sadosky Prize

In 2022, Yaiza won the Sadosky Prize. This award comes from the Association for Women in Mathematics. It recognized her "outstanding contributions" in spectral geometry and microlocal analysis. The prize highlighted her "breakthrough results" on many complex math problems. These problems involve things like how waves behave and how numbers relate to shapes in math.

American Mathematical Society

Because of her significant contributions to math, Yaiza Canzani was chosen as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a great honor, and she will be part of the 2025 class of fellows.
