Yalu River facts for kids
The Yalu River is a very important river in Asia. It forms part of the China-North Korea border. This means it acts like a natural line between the two countries.
The Yalu River starts high up in Mount Paektu. This mountain is also on the border between China and North Korea. From there, the river flows until it reaches the Korea Bay and empties into the sea.
People are not completely sure where the name "Yalu" comes from. Some language experts think it might come from the Manchu language. In Manchu, it could mean "between two places." Others believe the name comes from Mandarin. In Mandarin, it might mean "duck green," perhaps describing the color of the water.
Because it forms a border, the Yalu River has been a path for many people. Some people have tried to cross this river to leave North Korea. However, it has become much harder to cross the border now. Governments have added more guards, electric fences, and traps to make it more difficult.
