Yam Roll (also known as The Very Good Adventures of Yam Roll in Happy Kingdom) is a fun Canadian animated TV show. It was created by Jono Howard and Jon Izen. The series first aired on February 6, 2006, in Canada on CBC Television. It was produced by March Entertainment.
What is Yam Roll About?
The show takes place in a lively city called Happy Kingdom. This city is full of animated sushi characters and other human-like Japanese foods. But life in Happy Kingdom isn't always peaceful! Monsters often show up and cause trouble.
The main character is Yam Roll, a super-powered cab driver. He's a kind and sweet yam wrapped in rice. Yam Roll is secretly in love with Minamiko, a popular spicy tuna roll. Even though he saves her from monsters all the time, she barely notices him!
Yam Roll gets help from his wise teacher, Katcho Miso. Katcho is an old lump of salty bean paste. Yam Roll's best friend, Ebi-san, a super energetic shrimp, also joins him. Together with their other friends, Yam Roll's life is always an exciting adventure!
Meet the Characters
- Yam Roll: He's a taxi driver who wears a cowboy hat and boots. Yam Roll is an orange yam wrapped in rice. He has special powers from his teacher Katcho and Mount Foopi. These powers let him fly, lift heavy things, and even change shape! But he still tries to live a normal life in Happy Kingdom. Lee Tockar does his voice.
- Ebi: Ebi-san is Yam Roll's best friend. He's a boiled shrimp who is super enthusiastic and full of energy. Ebi loves to get Yam Roll into exciting (and sometimes embarrassing) situations. He can never sit still!
- Edamame: This character is a soybean lightly covered in sea salt. Edamame is another one of Yam Roll's good friends. He doesn't have arms, so he uses his two legs instead!
- Tamago: Poor Tamago always carries a very heavy omelette on his back. This makes him a bit grumpy and he often complains about his back. He still goes on adventures with Yam Roll and his friends, but he'll always have something to grumble about. Joe Pingue is his voice actor.
- Minamiko: She is Yam Roll's big crush. Minamiko is a spicy tuna roll who is very popular with everyone in Happy Kingdom. Sadly for Yam Roll, she doesn't really know he exists, even though he often saves her from danger. Her main boyfriend is usually Milk Man, a carton of milk. Sunday Muse voices her.
- Katcho: Katcho Miso is Yam Roll's wise Zen master. He lives on top of Mount Foopi. Katcho gives Yam Roll smart advice and sometimes a gentle tap with his magic staff. He usually watches Yam Roll from afar, letting him learn from his own challenges.
- Spicy Tuna Cone: He is another one of Minamiko's boyfriends. Spicy Tuna Cone seems to be the mayor of Happy Kingdom. He also hosts karaoke nights sometimes. He's a minor friend of Yam Roll.
- Genki: Genki is a kind girl who would be happy to date Yam Roll. She loves stuffed animals.
Many other sushi characters live in Happy Kingdom too. They are all named after real sushi types, like Ebi, which means "shrimp" in Japanese!
