Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Yamanoue Sōji (born 1544, died 1590) was a famous Japanese tea master. He was a student of the well-known tea master Sen no Rikyū. Yamanoue Sōji wrote an important book called Yamanoue Sōji ki. This book shared his thoughts on Rikyū's teachings. It also described the world of chanoyu, which is the Japanese tea ceremony, at that time.

In his book, Yamanoue Sōji also wrote about a special idea called ichi-go ichi-e. This phrase means "one time, one meeting." It reminds us that every moment, especially during a tea ceremony, is unique and will never happen again. So, we should appreciate it fully.

Yamanoue Sōji's Life and Challenges

Yamanoue Sōji started his life as a merchant from a city called Sakai. Later, he became a close student of Sen no Rikyū. His skills in the tea ceremony grew, and he became very respected.

He later worked for the Later Hōjō lords in a place called Odawara. However, these lords faced a powerful leader named Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Hōjō clan lost their power after a big conflict known as the Siege of Odawara (1590). Because of these political changes and conflicts, Yamanoue Sōji's life came to an end in 1590.
