The Yanda were an Aboriginal Australian people. They lived in the state of Queensland, Australia.

Where the Yanda Lived

The Yanda people lived in a part of Queensland, Australia. Their traditional lands were north of a place called Warenda. This area was near the top of the Hamilton River, which flows into the Georgina River. According to studies by Norman Tindale, their land covered about 3,100 square miles (8,000 square kilometers). They also lived in areas known today as Toolebuc and Lucknow.

Yanda Customs and Traditions

The Yanda people had unique customs. For special events, Yanda women wore a special decoration. It was called a bowra. This ornament was made from two kangaroo teeth. They were joined together using animal sinews and tree resins at the bottom. The Yanda also used a traditional plant called pituri.

A Look at Yanda History

White settlers first arrived on Yanda lands in 1878. At that time, it was thought that about 100 Yanda people lived there. Some of them were very old. Less than ten years later, the number of Yanda people had dropped by half. There were only about 50 people left. This group included 15 men, 20 women, and 15 children.
