How Did Yankee Springs Become a Park?

The story of Yankee Springs becoming a park is quite interesting.

From Farms to Forests

In the 1830s, people started to settle and farm the land around Yankee Springs. But by the 1930s, the soil had become worn out from farming. The land was not in good shape.

The United States government then bought this land. A group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) stepped in to help. The CCC was a program that put young men to work during the Great Depression. They started planting new trees and helping the land heal.

Becoming a State Park

In 1943, the government gave the land to the State of Michigan. That's when it officially became a state park. Thanks to the hard work of the CCC, this area was restored and turned into the beautiful recreation spot we know today.
