Middleville is a small village located in Michigan, a state in the United States. It's part of Barry County and is close to the larger Grand Rapids area. In 2020, about 4,295 people lived in Middleville.

Village History

The first person from Europe to own land in Middleville was Calvin G. Hill. He came from New York and bought about 400 acres (1.6 km²) of land in 1834. This land was on both sides of the Thornapple River.

The village was probably planned out before 1850. However, the official map, called a plat, wasn't recorded until 1859. Before 1843, people often called the settlement "Thornapple."

The name Middleville first belonged to a post office. This post office was on the stagecoach route between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. It was located at the home of Benjamin S. Dibble.

Dibble agreed to have the post office there because U.S. Representative Lucius Lyon asked him. Lyon suggested the name "Dibbleville," but Dibble didn't like it. The name "Middleville" was chosen because there was an Indian village nearby called "Middle Village."

Dibble became the postmaster in July 1839 and worked until 1842. The post office stayed at Dibble's house until 1843. Then, it moved to the current village of Middleville, with Calvin G. Hill as the new postmaster. The village later became known by the post office's name.
