Yao Wang facts for kids
Yao Wang is a Chinese-American engineer who works with video and computers. She is a professor at New York University (NYU), where she teaches about electrical, computer, and biomedical engineering. She also helps lead the engineering school as an Associate Dean.
Professor Wang studies many interesting things. She works on how videos are sent over the internet and how computers can understand what they see. She also uses computers to help doctors. For example, she uses machine learning (which is like teaching computers to learn) to help find health problems like lymphedema and concussions.
Her Journey in Education and Work
Yao Wang studied electronic engineering in China at Tsinghua University. She earned her first degree in 1983 and her master's degree in 1985.
Later, she came to the United States and earned her Ph.D. (a very high degree) in electrical and computer engineering in 1990. She got this degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
In the same year, 1990, she started teaching at the Polytechnic Institute of New York. This school later became the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, where she still teaches today.
Her Book
Yao Wang also helped write a textbook called Video Processing and Communications. She wrote it with two other people, Jörn Ostermann and Ya-Qin Zhang. This book was published in 2001 and teaches about how video works and how it's sent.
Awards and Honors
In 2004, Yao Wang was named a Fellow of the IEEE. This is a special honor given to engineers who have made big contributions to their field. She received it because of her important work in processing and sending video.
