How 'Yarlington Mill' Was Found
This apple tree was first discovered in 1898. A man named Mr. Bartlett found it growing wild out of a wall near a mill in Yarlington. It was a "wilding," meaning it grew there all by itself without being planted by people.
Later, a grower named Harry Masters helped make this apple famous. He also helped grow another apple called 'Harry Masters' Jersey'.
At first, 'Yarlington Mill' apples were mostly planted in Somerset. Then, farmers in Devon and other areas in the West Country of England, where cider is made, started planting them too.
What the Tree and Apple Are Like
The 'Yarlington Mill' Tree
The 'Yarlington Mill' apple tree produces a lot of apples, which is great for cider makers! However, it tends to have "biennial fruiting." This means it might produce a huge crop of apples one year, and then a smaller crop the next year.
The 'Yarlington Mill' Apple Fruit
The apples themselves are usually small to medium in size. They are round but a bit pointy at the bottom, like a cone. They have a nice red color.
This apple is known as a "Jersey" type apple in Somerset. When it comes to making cider, it's called a "mild bittersweet" apple. This means it has a good balance of sugar and a slight bitter taste, which is perfect for making traditional cider.
