At the time of his death, he was the oldest living man in the world. He was 112 years and 312 days old. He lived in Moriyama-ku, a part of Nagoya, Japan.
Yasutaro Koide's Life Story
Yasutaro Koide was born in Tsuruga, Japan. This was on March 13, 1903. He worked as a tailor for many years. He also worked in fields. He was very active and could even ride a tricycle until he was 105 years old. At that age, he had a heatstroke. This was the only time he needed an ambulance. Other than that, he was rarely seriously ill.
When he was 107, Koide moved to Nagoya. He went to live with his daughter there. He had a large family. He had 7 children, 9 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He even had at least one great-great-grandchild.
Secrets to a Long Life
When Yasutaro Koide was 110 years old, he could still read newspapers. He did not need glasses to do this. He could also eat food without needing dentures. He said his favorite food was bread.
He shared his secret to living a long life. He believed it was important not to overdo things. He also said that he did not smoke or drink alcohol.
World's Oldest Man
Yasutaro Koide became the world's oldest living man. This happened after another Japanese man, Sakari Momoi, passed away. Momoi was a little older than Koide. He died on July 5, 2015.
In November 2015, Koide became one of the 25 oldest people alive. Sadly, in December 2015, he was hospitalized. He had problems with his heart.

Yasutaro Koide passed away at the hospital. This was at 12:17 AM on January 19, 2016. He died from pneumonia and heart failure. He passed away less than eight weeks before his 113th birthday.
After his death, Yisrael Kristal became the world's oldest living man. In Japan, Masamitsu Yoshida became the oldest living man.
