Yates was a small place, a bit like a tiny town or village, in Taylor County, West Virginia. It was what we call an unincorporated community. This means it didn't have its own local government, like a mayor or town council. Sadly, you can't visit Yates today because it's completely underwater! The area where Yates once stood is now covered by the waters of Tygart Lake.

What Happened to Yates?

Yates disappeared because of a big construction project. Between 1934 and 1938, a huge structure called the Tygart Dam was built. This dam was created to control the flow of the Tygart Valley River. When the dam was finished, it formed a large lake behind it, which is now known as Tygart Lake. The water from this new lake covered the land where Yates used to be.

Why Was the Tygart Dam Built?

The Tygart Dam was built for several important reasons. One main goal was to help control floods. Rivers can sometimes overflow their banks, causing a lot of damage to homes and farms. The dam helped prevent this. It also helped manage the water levels for river navigation, making it easier for boats to travel. Plus, it provided a steady water supply for nearby areas.

Where Was Yates Located?

Yates was located in the state of West Virginia, which is in the eastern part of the United States. More specifically, it was in Taylor County. This area is known for its beautiful hills and valleys. Even though Yates is gone, the surrounding region is still a popular spot for outdoor activities, especially around Tygart Lake.
