Yefim "Fimi" Naumovich Bronfman (Russian: Ефим Наумович Бронфман) is a very famous pianist. He was born on April 10, 1958, in Tashkent, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. He later became a citizen of both Israel and the United States.

Becoming a Pianist

Yefim Bronfman was born in Tashkent, a city in what is now Uzbekistan. When he was 15 years old, his family moved to Israel. Later, in 1989, he became a citizen of the United States.

He learned from some amazing piano teachers. These included Arie Vardi, Rudolf Firkušný, Leon Fleisher, and Rudolf Serkin.

First Performances

Bronfman had his first big international performance in 1975. He played with Zubin Mehta and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

In 1989, he played for the first time at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is a very famous place for musicians to perform. In 1991, he also performed many times with the famous violinist Isaac Stern.

Awards and Special Projects

Grammy Award Winner

Yefim Bronfman won a Grammy award in 1997. He won it for his recording of three piano concertos by the composer Béla Bartók. He played with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra for this recording.

Playing for Disney

In 1999, Bronfman appeared in Disney's movie Fantasia 2000. He was in a short part that introduced the "Steadfast Tin Soldier" story. The music used for this part was his performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2. He played this with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Working with Orchestras

Bronfman loves playing with different orchestras. He has performed with many famous groups around the world. These include the San Francisco Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.

He has played many well-known piano concertos. These include Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto and Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1. He also often plays Sergei Rachmaninoff's challenging Piano Concerto No. 3.

Chamber Music

Besides playing with big orchestras, Bronfman also enjoys playing chamber music. This is music for a smaller group of instruments. He has performed with many different chamber groups and musicians.

Recordings

Yefim Bronfman has made many recordings. One important set of recordings he made was for Sony Records. This set included all of Sergei Prokofiev's piano sonatas and concertos. For the concertos, he played with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
