Yeh Chu-lan's Journey in Politics
Yeh Chu-lan worked in advertising for seventeen years. She decided to enter politics after a difficult personal event involving her husband, Cheng Nan-jung, in 1989.
In 1992, she became a leader within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the Legislative Yuan. The Legislative Yuan is like Taiwan's parliament, where laws are made. She was a deputy convener, meaning she helped organize the party's group there. In 1995, she became the main convener.
First DPP Government Roles
From 2000 to 2002, Yeh Chu-lan was the Minister of Transportation and Communications. This job involved overseeing things like roads, railways, airports, and ports in Taiwan. She was a very important person in the government, ranking third in the Cabinet.
After that, from 2002 to 2004, she led the Hakka Affairs Council. This council works to protect and promote the culture and language of the Hakka people, who are a major ethnic group in Taiwan.
In 2004, she was chosen to be the Vice Premier. This is a very high position, second only to the Premier (who is like the prime minister). In this role, she also helped with consumer protection and economic planning for the country.
Towards the end of 2005, she made history. She became the first woman to serve as the acting mayor of Kaohsiung, a major city in Taiwan. She took on this role when the previous mayor, Frank Hsieh, became the Premier.
In August 2007, she was sworn in as the secretary-general of the Presidential Office. This means she was a top assistant to the President, helping manage the President's daily work and important documents.
Later Roles in Government
During the time Tsai Ing-wen was President, Yeh Chu-lan continued to serve Taiwan. She was a senior advisor to the President. This role meant she gave important advice and guidance to the President on various national matters.
In 2017, she was chosen to be the chairwoman of the Taiwan Visitors Association. This organization works to encourage people from all over the world to visit Taiwan and enjoy its beautiful sights and culture.
