Yeh Chu-lan (Chinese: 葉菊蘭; pinyin: Yè Júlán; Wade–Giles: Yeh Chü-lan) was born in 1949. She is a Taiwanese politician. She has held many important jobs in the government. These include serving as the Vice Premier of Taiwan. She also worked as the acting Mayor of Kaohsiung.
Yeh Chu-lan was also the Minister of Transportation and Communications. She was the Minister of the Council for Hakka Affairs. Later, she became the secretary-general for the President's office. She was a senior advisor to President Tsai Ing-wen.
Yeh Chu-lan's Political Journey
Yeh Chu-lan started her political career in the early 1990s. In 1992, she was a leader for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). This was in the Legislative Yuan, which is like Taiwan's parliament. She became the main leader of the DPP group there in 1995.
First DPP Government Roles
From 2000 to 2002, Yeh Chu-lan was the Minister of Transportation and Communications. This job is very important for how people travel and send things. She was in charge of roads, trains, and airports.
After that, from 2002 to 2004, she led the Hakka Affairs Council. This group helps protect the culture and rights of the Hakka people in Taiwan.
In 2004, she became the Vice Premier of Taiwan. This is a very high position in the government. She helped the Premier run the country. She also worked on consumer protection and economic planning.
In late 2005, she made history. She became the first woman to be the acting mayor of Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung is a very big city in Taiwan.
In August 2007, she took on another big role. She became the secretary-general of the Presidential Office. This means she helped the President with many daily tasks and decisions.
Yeh Chu-lan was considered as a possible running mate for the DPP's presidential candidate in 2008. This would have made her a candidate for Vice President. However, another politician was chosen for that role.
Later Roles in Government
During the time Tsai Ing-wen was President, Yeh Chu-lan continued to serve. She was a senior advisor to the President. This means she gave important advice to the President.
In 2017, she was chosen to be the chairwoman of the Taiwan Visitors Association. This group works to encourage people from all over the world to visit Taiwan.
